ABOUT THE BOOK
Development of propulsion engines operating on continuous and pulse detonations is a subject of growing interest worldwide. The concept of a detonation engine is attractive for simplicity, easy scaling, reduced fuel consumption, and intrinsic capability of operation from zero approach stream velocity to high supersonic flight speeds. In the detonation-based power plants, detonation is initiated in a tube that serves as the combustor. The propagating detonation wave rapidly burns the fuel in the chamber resulting in a nearly constant-volume heat addition process that produces a high pressure in the combustor and provides the thrust. The operational cycle of such power plants provides a higher thermodynamic efficiency as compared to the Brayton cycle used in gas turbines and ramjets.
This volume contains original articles and provides up-to-date information on pulse and continuous detonation propulsion written by world-known experts. The articles are edited and organized in three parts:
(2) Continuous detonation propulsion; and
(3) Pulse detonation propulsion.
The volume is prepared as a reference for research scientists and practicing engineers in the field of combustion and propulsion, and can be useful as an advanced graduate level text on detonation fundamentals and applications.
ABOUT THE EDITORS
Gabriel D. Roy, Ph.D., manages the Advanced Propulsion Program for the U.S. Navy at the Office of Naval Research. He also managed the Pulse Power Program for the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, and R&D programs in industry, and was a Professor in Mechanical Engineering. He is a recognized world leader in magnetohydrodynamics, propulsion, and fuels. He has edited over a dozen books, authored a number of articles, and has received patents and awards in the combustion discipline. Dr. Roy is a Fellow of AIAA, and served as an associate editor of AIAA Journal of Propulsion and Power.
Sergei M. Frolov, Ph.D., D.Sc., is the Director of Laboratory of Explosion Processes at Semenov Institute of Chemical Physics, and Professor at Moscow Physical Engineering Institute. He is an active research scientist in combustion and detonation physics and chemistry, an author of over 300 journal and conference papers and an editor of 18 books on combustion and detonation topics. He is the Executive Secretary of the Russian Journal of Chemical Physics, and a member of the Editorial Boards of several journals. Dr. Frolov is a recipient of national and international awards in science and technology.
